Originally founded in 1890 by Alfred Thompson, under the name of A.G.Thompson Pty LTD, which was changed to Kookaburra, the native Australian bird which lived in a tree outside Thompson’s workshop who called his pet. A saddle maker by trade, Thompson migrated to Australia from his UK home town of St.Ives, Huntingdon to ply his trade successfully until motor cars quickly became the preferred method of travel threatening his livelihood.
Thompson turned his leather crafting skills to manufacturing Cricket balls providing top quality cricket balls around the world until in the mid 1980’s the company began manufacturing Cricket bats along with clothing, footwear and protective equipment. With operational bases worldwide including UK, New Zealand, India, South Africa, Kookaburra & Bangladesh, Kookaburra have very quickly become a world renowned and trusted Cricket bat maker supporting all-time greats across the globe. Players such as Ricky Ponting, Damien Martyn, Michael Hussey,Kumar Sangakarra, Sanath Jayasuriya, Graham Thorpe, Ab De Villiers, Martin Guptill, Tim Paine and Jos Butler all entrusted Kookaburra to supply the tools of their trade.
Kookaburra made cricket bat history when it unleashed the Kahuna, Beast and Diablo ranges, with a thin Carbon graphite sticker covering the entire back of the bat. Ricky Ponting had just scored a double century against Pakistan when the ICC, under recommendation of the MCC the custodians of the game, banned the bat as the sticker added extra power to the bat giving batters an unfair advantage, while contravening Law 6 of the MCC Laws of Cricket.
After 130 years in Cricket kookaburra Sport is still 100% family owned and run with fourth and fifth generation of Thompson family members still working in the Head Office in Melbourne.
